Top seed Simona Halep dodged a bullet as she overcame a stiff combat from Germany’s Annika Beck in an intriguing three-set encounter at the Longgang Tennis Centre on Monday.

The Romanian star looked tarnished all through, but eventually managed to pull off a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph over her little-known adversary in one hour and 53 minutes.

“It was my first match of the year, which is always difficult,” WTATennis.com quoted Halep as saying. “After the first set I knew I had to be more aggressive, hit the balls and open the court more, and I think I did it well.

“I was trying to fight for every point and win this match. I’m happy to reach the second round.”

Petra Kvitova, the second seed, had a contrasting day as she smoothly sailed into the second round with a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over wildcard-entrant Ying Ying Duan.
