Sixth seed Simona Halep had a routine day in the office as she swiftly moved on to the pre-quarters of the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday. The Romanian star needed just over an hour to record a 6-1 6-1 conquest of Italian Karin Knapp in a lopsided second-round affair.

Halep dominated on her first serve and broke her opponent’s serve thrice each in both sets to make further progress, as she’s been slated to lock horns with Switzerland’s 10th seed Timea Bacsinszky, who got the better of Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 5-7 6-4.

8th seed Carla Suarez Navarro shrugged off health issues to move past the dangerous Sabine Lisicki of Germany. The Spaniard needed one hour and 15 minutes to register a 6-3 6-2 victory to extend her career head-to-head record by 3-0 against the same opponent.

The other winners of the day include Dominika Cibulkova (d. Caroline Garcia 0-6 6-3 6-4), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (d. Camila Giorgi w/o), Sorana Cirstea (d. Danka Kovinic 6-3 7-5), and Samantha Stosur (d. Lucie Safarova w/o).

Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles event, the top-seeded Indian-Swiss combination of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis got their campaign off to a triumphant start as they moved past Cha-Jung Chuang and Darijia Jurak 6-0 6-4 to enter the quarter-finals.
