Defending champion Petra Kvitova crashed out of the Mutua Madrid Open after conceding a straight-set defeat to unseeded Daria Gavrilova in the third round of the tournament in the Spanish city on Wednesday.

The 5th-seeded Kvitova looked rusty on serve as she was broken thrice en route a 6-3 6-4 defeat to the 39th-ranked Gavrilova. Interestingly, Kvitova was knocked out by the same opponent at the Australian Open earlier this year.

It was also curtains for Victoria Azarenka, the No. 4 seed, who was compelled to pull out of the tournament due to a back injury, which sends American qualifier Louisa Chirico into the quarter-finals of the WTA Premier event here.

Later, in the press conference, Azarenka revealed that she “tweaked” her back in the first round, which was evident in the second match, and that she’s taken the decision to withdraw keeping in mind the “bigger picture”.

Elsewhere, 6th-seeded Simona Halep avenged her loss from Miami Open after she saw off 10th seed Timea Bacsinszky 6-2 6-3. Moving on, the Romanian is scheduled to meet countrywoman Irina-Camelia Begu, who defeated Christina Mchale 6-7 6-4 6-4.
