Nick Kyrgios skipped the recently-concluded French Open to stay fresh for the grass season. His campaign on the green courts didn’t begin on an ideal note though as he crashed out in the first round of the ATP Stuttgart Open.

Up against Matteo Berrettini, the Australian star looked rusty during a 3-6 4-6 defeat in a first round battle that lasted just 53 minutes.

Kyrgios, however, won a spectacular point after serving underarm during one of the rallies. No sooner did he surprise Berrettini with the unorthodox serve, than he rushed on to the net before the latter could even return.

While the Italian managed to lob it over, Kyrgios responded with a tweener before going on to win the point (CLICK HERE TO SEE VIDEO).

“I am really happy with my second match on grass this year after the Davis Cup in India,” Berrettini was quoted as saying by tennis-tourtalk.

“I am pleased with my performance. The serve was key and I was focused and ready when I had my chances on the return,” added the 23-year-old, who is next scheduled to face 2nd seed Karen Khachanov of Russia for a place in the quarter-finals.
