If there’s anything Rafael Nadal hasn’t done right this clay season, it was his pre-tournament press conference – well, take that with a pinch of salt.

Answering questions in Spanish and English in tandem can get difficult sometimes, and that’s exactly what happened with the 16-time Grand Slam champion.

While interacting to an English reporter, Nadal started answering in Spanish, only to realize his mistake after a while as the press room burst into laughter.

“Oh! You want English, no? Sorry,” he said.

Meanwhile, having won the all the sets (and matches and tournaments, of course) played on clay this season, Nadal will start as the overwhelming favourite at the Madrid Masters.

The ‘King of Clay’, who got a bye in the first round, is scheduled to take on French veteran Gael Monfils in the second round on Tuesday.

And, Nadal is wary of the threat that Monfils possesses. “Gael is a tough opponent for everybody,” he said.

“He’s a player with a lot of talent, with a lot of potential. He’s a tough opponent, of course.”
