Rafael Nadal got his Australian Open campaign under way with a straight sets win over local hope James Duckworth on Monday. The Spaniard won 6-4 6-3 7-5.

And he appeared in high spirits at the subsequent press conference, where he didn’t mind poking fun at a sleeping journalist, whom apparently he knows.

Nadal interrupted a question to single out a sleeping journalist with his expressions. No wonder, the entire press room burst into laughter.

“He’s not interested today,” Nadal joked. “He’s closing his eyes to be more focused on what I’m saying.”

Meanwhile, the 31-year-old explained why he pulled out of last week’s ATP event in Brisbane.

“It was a sad decision that I had to take to not play in Brisbane. I was there and ready to play, but I had a small injury issue with my leg.

“So the doctor didn’t allow me to go on court even if I wanted to. This happens when you’re coming back.”

Nadal will lock horns with the winner of the match between Matthew Ebden and Jan-Lennard Struff.
