Rafael Nadal had a tough day in the office on Tuesday.

Playing his first competitive tournament since winning the US Open title last month, the world No. 1 produced a rusty performance but held on to clinch a 4-6 7-6 (6) 7-5 win over Lucas Pouille in the first round of ATP/WTA China Open in Beijing.

Nadal didn’t just have to deal with his gutsy French opponent, but also had to also overcome a shoe-slip that floored him midway during the match.

It happened when the Spaniard was serving at 2-2 in the second set when – in a quest to rush on to the net – lost his left shoe and eventually lost his balance.

Nadal, however, recovered well to win in two hours and 30 minutes.

The top seed next awaits the winner of the other first-round match between China’s Di Wu and Karen Khachanov of Russia.
