It’s safe to say Bernard Tomic and controversies go hand in hand. So, when the Australian tennis player’s exhibition match against countryman Nick Kyrgios was about to get over – without a noticeable controversy all through – he decided to create one. And how!

While serving for the match at 6-3 5-4 (40-15), Tomic came up with the cheekiest serve one could image. It was underhand. It was meant to deceive. It came out of the blue. And it was all over: Kyrgios couldn’t understand what had happened as he proceeded to the net for the customary handshake.

No wonder, fans were quick to come up with mixed reactions on social media following Tomic’s 45-minute victory.

“I have never seen a serve like this. Bernard Tomic, behave!” one person wrote. “Jesus Christ this is grim for any Aussie tennis supporter,” another one added.

Many also pointed out the serve was against the rules as it was hit only after being bounced off the court.

“Technically that should be Nicks point as Bernard bounces another ball before the point was over. Just like if a ball falls out of a pocket mid-point. Bloody cheeky though, gotta love that!” one tweet read.

“If I’d paid to see this match (or worse, placed a bet) I would be utterly furious. As it is, I’m just ashamed. Sigh.”

One user put it simply, calling it the greatest serve of all time (in jest, of course).
