Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka showed off his class with a gesture of sportsmanship during his first round match against Britain’s Daniel Evans at the Fever Tree Championships in London on Wednesday.

During the first set, Evans suffered a nasty fall after failing to anticipate direction of a return. While he writhed in pain, a worried Wawrinka rushed to the other side of the net to check is he was fine and offered some help.

The physio was then called in for treatment and the contest resumed soon after, with Wawrinka going on to pull off a 6-3 6-4 conquest.

He was as gracious in the post-match press conference though. “I expected a tough match. He’s won more matches in the past two weeks than I have in my whole career on grass,” Wawrinka quipped of Evans, who recently won back-to-back Challenger events in Surbiton and Nottingham.

“It’s been a tough two days with the rain, but I was happy to be back on this court with an amazing atmosphere. I’m really happy to have won today.”

The 34-year-old is next scheduled to face Nicolas Mahut of France on Thursday.
