Shuai Zhang of China and Samantha Stosur of Australia upset defending champions Kristina Mladenovic of France and Timea Babos of Hungary to win the women’s doubles title at the Australian Open 2019 on Friday.

While Stosur gave the hosts its first trophy since Alicia Molik’s triumph (partnering Svetlana Kuznetsova) in 2005, it was a maiden Grand Slam win for Zhang, who had never made it beyond the semi-finals at any Major before.

The duo, however, had to overcome a couple of bloopers.

First, a miscued forehand from Zhang went on to hit Stosur on the back. Then, during an exchange at the net, they clashed their rackets in an attempt to return a dropshot.

Even though Zhang and Stosur were rusty on their serve – they committed a total of eight double faults – it was that very weapon that had their opponents on the mat.

Zhang and Stosur won 56 points on their serves (against 31 won by Mladenovic and Babos) en route to winning 6-3 6-4.
