Roger Federer got his clay court campaign off to a winning start, pulling off a 6-2 6-3 win over Richard Gasquet at the Madrid Open on Tuesday.

Despite making his first appearance on clay since 2016, the Swiss 20-time Grand Slam champion looked in ominous touch as he hit 28 winners while committing 20 unforced errors to emerge victorious in just 52 minutes.

Stats aside, there were a couple of magical moments Federer produced en route his win.

First, he hit an incredible backhand drop shot off Gasquet’s serve to close out the first set. Later in the contest, he came up with a control+c control+v of it, only for this time to come midway through a rally (really his first clay outing in three years?)

No wonder, his French opponent didn’t bother to give the ball a chase on either occasions.

“It was nice seeing [Gasquet] back after so many months being away from the Tour with injury,” Federer was quoted as saying by ATP World Tour.

“I think for both of us it was a special match being back here in Madrid.”

Federer is next scheduled to lock horns with either Gael Monfils of France or Marton Fucsovics of Hungary on Thursday.
