Nick Kyrgios turned up his entertaining best en route to a 7-5 6-4 conquest of Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The Australian star dominated on his serve, winning as many as 91 per cent of the points on his first serve and a whopping 81 per cent on his second to emerge victorious after one hour and 20 minutes.

Of the many magical moments Kyrgios produced, there was one in the latter half of the contest that took his opponent as well as the spectators by surprise.

In the sixth game of the second set, Kyrgios served one wide before nailing a drop-dead dropshot-volley that gave Sonego absolutely zero chance of making through.

No wonder, the man of the moment was himself surprised as he reacted by taking a bow.

That wasn’t the only moment he egged on the crowd though. In the last game of the match, Kyrgios played a perfect tweener to have his fans on their feet.

“Honestly I wish they’d just roll over and it was a 6-1, 6-1 job,” Kyrgios was quoted as saying by ATP.

“No, it’s a lot of fun. Obviously just from that match I can see his strengths, his first serve and his forehand, looks to run around and dictate.

“I think the strengths of all my opponents come out when they play me. That’s pretty cool.”

Up next, the 24-year-old has a tough task ahead as he is scheduled to lock horns with 8th Karen Khachanov of Russia on Wednesday.
