As Karolina Pliskova sealed her place in the semi-finals of the Australian Open on Wednesday, her husband Michal Hrdlicka was perhaps the happiest man on the planet.

He celebrated with a huge roar, pumped and thumped both his fists with all the power his brawny hands had, hugged the others in his box, took his cap off and put it on one of them, and breathed heavily.

The reason? Well, Pliskova had just escaped from the jaws of defeat as she rallied from 1-5 down in the third set to win 6-4 4-6 7-5 over the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

“I was almost in the locker room but now [I] stand here as the winner,” Pliskova said afterward.

“My mind was in the locker room at 5-1 down but I was still here. I was too passive and mentally down but she got a little bit shaky,” she added.

Pliskova is scheduled to face reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka of Japan in the semi-finals on Thursday.

“Naomi Osaka is dangerous but there is nobody more dangerous than Serena.”

The winner will face either Petra Kvitova or Danielle Collins in the all-important clash.
