5-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the Australian Open 2019 following a three-set defeat at the hands of local hope Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round on Sunday.

Naturally, she was in no good mood at the subsequent press conference. Perhaps rubbing salt on her wound, as one may say, Sharapova was asked about the drug ban that she completed last year.

“You took meldonium legally for ten years to deal with your health problems. Now that it’s banned and you can no longer take it, is it a struggle physically to deal with the demand of a Grand Slam fortnight?” one journalist asked.

No wonder, Sharapova wore a glum look as she hit back, asking: “What do you want me to say to that question?

Reporter: I don’t know. Just the truth, I guess.

Sharapova: I think that’s a silly question to ask.

Reporter: Did it affect you though?

The Russian wasn’t interested in continuing it any further (see video below).

As for Barty, she is scheduled to take on Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.
