Matteo Berrettini continued his dream run at the US Open after upsetting French veteran Gael Monfils in the fifth-set tiebreaker to make his maiden Grand Slam semi-final.

The 23-year-old Italian, who had crashed out in the first round of Cincinnati Masters, prevailed 3-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 7-6(5) in a battle that went on for almost four hours on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

And no sooner did a Monfils return land out on match point, than Berrettini celebrated by lying flat on the court before throwing his cap away in joy and letting out a huge roar.

No wonder, the duo exchanged a warm embrace at the net.

“I was dying inside,” an exhausted Berrettini was quoted as saying by tournament’s official website. “I’m really proud of my tennis today.”

Berrettini, however, has a mountainous task ahead, with 18-time Major winner Rafael Nadal awaiting him in the semi-finals.

“He’s the greatest fighter ever in this sport,” he said of his Spanish nemesis. “His attitude is something that is close to perfection. He’s always, like, 5-0, 40-Love down, he’s always there.”

Can Berrettini give Nadal a run for his money? We shall know in a couple of days’ time.
