Did you know Denis Shapovalov became the new Canadian No. 1 in this week’s ATP rankings? Well, never mind if you didn’t, for even the man himself was not aware of the fact.

Following his come-from-behind 1-6 6-3 7-6 victory against Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych in the first round of the Italian Open in Rome on Tuesday, the Canadian teenage sensation was surprised when a journalist informed him that he ended the reign of Milos Raonic as the best-ranked player from his country.

“Seriously? This is insane,” Shapovalov, 19, said. “It’s something that I’ve been working all my life for. I had no idea that I was in a position to achieve this.”

The 19-year-old hoped his latest achievement will bolster his quest of bringing home more laurels. “I want to help the country and lead my nation to win the Davis Cup one day,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shapovalov, who is currently ranked 29th in the world, will look to carry the momentum in his second round match against Dutch Robin Haase on Wednesday.
