Spanish tennis player Carla Suarez Navarro suffered a nasty fall during her second-round match against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday.

During the ninth game of the match, Navarro galloped backwards in an attempt to make a forehand return that saw her twist her ankle and tumble over her back.

Although she was back on her feet soon, chair umpire Marija Cicak was quick to come down and check if she was okay. Svitolina, too, showed sportsmanship by coming all the way to the other side of the net.

That fall somehow seemed to have swung the momentum in Navarro’s favour as she overcame a one-set deficit to clinch a 2-6 7-6 6-4 win over world No. 4 Svitolina.

Navarro later shrugged off injury concerns ahead of her scheduled third-round encounter against Bernarda Pera of the USA.

“I fell down because I twisted my ankle, my right ankle, but I feel good,” she said.

“I fell down in the second set [but] I could play all of the final set. Now a little bit of treatment, but I will be fine for tomorrow.”
