Andy Murray played perhaps his best match since comeback, but the Brit’s effort went in vain as he was handed a 6-4 2-6 4-6 defeat by Alex De Minaur in the second round of the ATP Zhuhai Championships.

Playing in just his fourth tournament since returning after a hip surgery that almost pulled the plugs on his career, Murray played some scintillating tennis, even pulling off a beautiful lob over his 20-year-old opponent.

Another highlight of his performance came midway during the second set, when Murray attempted a no-look forehand shot.

Despite the defeat, the three-time Grand Slam remained upbeat ahead of next week’s China Open in Beijing.

“The level in Beijing is a little bit higher in terms of the quality of players, so I’m not playing Top-20, Top-30 tennis right now, I’m probably playing Top-70, Top-60, sort of level,” Murray was quoted as saying by Scotsman.

“So it’s not going to be that easy for me to win matches there. However, I can still make a few improvements in the next couple of days.

“I’ll get a chance to rest from this week the next couple of days and then hopefully get a couple of good days’ practice there in Beijing and wait and see what happens with the draw.”

As for De Minaur, he is scheduled to play fellow young gun Borna Coric in the quarter-finals on Friday.
