Milos Raonic and Simona Halep became the firsts from the tennis contingent to pull out of the next month’s Rio Olympics over the Zika virus concerns.

Many a participant have raised eyebrows over the alarming rise of the mosquito-borne virus with about 20 golfers deciding to give the sport’s mega-event a miss.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my withdrawal from participation in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” said Raonic, the Canadian World No. 6, who finished as the runner-up at the recently-concluded Wimbledon.

“After much deliberation with my family and coaches, I am making this decision for a variety of health concerns including the uncertainty around the Zika virus,” he added.

Halep, the women’s No. 5, said that she took the decision of withdrawing after talks with her doctor and family.

“After several talks with doctors and my family, I concluded that the risks are too high for my career and for my health, especially as a woman,” the Romanian wrote on her Facebook page.

“Family is much too important for me and I can’t risk not being able to have one of my own after my career in tennis is over,” she added.

The event at the Games is scheduled to be held from August 6-14 at the Olympic Tennis Centre.
