Ace American tennis player Venus Williams became just the second active female player to clinch 700 career wins after she got the better of Germany’s Julia Georges 6-4 6-3 to sail into the pre-quarterfinals of the WTA Wuhan Open in China on Tuesday.

Venus, a 7-time Grand Slam champion, turned out to be just the second active player on the women’s tour (after younger sister Serena Williams) and ninth player overall in the Open Era to have pulled off the feat.

“I was thinking, ‘How long would it take me to get to 800 now?’ Maybe that was my first thought.” the 35-year-old was quoted as saying by WTA website following a straight-set victory. “But it’s been a great 700 wins along the way.”

Venus, now, joins the likes of Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Virginia Wade, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Lindsey Davenport, Conchita Martínez, and Serena Williams among the other players to have crossed the 700-win mark in the Open Era.

Meanwhile, Venus is scheduled to cross the swords with Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro on Wednesday for a place in the last-eight stage of the tournament here.
