Indian tennis superstar, Sania Mirza, has been nominated for the prestigious Khel Ratna – India’s highest honour for achievement in sports. The decision to confer her with the award, however, rests with the awards committee.

“We had got a late recommendation from All India Tennis Association (AITA) but the Minister accepted that and recommended the same to the Awards Committee,” India’s sports secretary Ajit Sharan was quoted as saying by TOI.  “But the final decision to give the honour rests with the Awards Committee.”

The 28-year-old Mirza is often regarded as the trailblazer of the sport for women in India. Currently ranked No. 1 in the women’s doubles rankings, Mirza recently paired up with Martina Hingis to lift the Wimbledon crown last month.

Besides, the Hyderabad-resident also has three mixed doubles titles from majors under her belt, having emerged victorious at Australian Open 2009 and French Open 2012 (partnering Mahesh Bhupathi) and US Open 2014 (partnering Bruno Soares).
