Tennis Legend Steffi Graf Hopes Serena Williams Breaks Her Grand Slam Record

Legendary tennis player Steffi Graf has backed fellow 22 Grand Slam-winner Serena Williams to surpass her record at the upcoming US Open 2016.

Williams, the current world number one, had equaled Graf’s tally by pulling off the Wimbledon crown last month. Should the American clinch the season-ending major, she will only trail the all-time record of 24 titles held by Lindsay Davenport.

Instead of perturbing about her record, Graf insists that she’s hopeful of Williams bettering her as records are meant to be broken.

“I’m happy for her, I’m excited for her,” Graf was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “I think it’s cool that records are being broken, that’s what they’re there for. She’s been phenomenal to the sport of tennis; it’s been great to watch. I hope she does break it.”

Williams, who has won six titles at home so far in her career, remains just one triumph shy of having the most US Open titles by a female in Open Era. The tournament is scheduled to get underway on August 29.
