Team France have given a sturdy fight to title-favorites Switzerland in the ongoing David Cup final.

Earlier, Stanislas Wawrinka gave an early lead to his team by making light work of Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, before a spectacular performance from Gael Monfils against Roger Federer help them level the honours.

In the opening rubber, Wawrinka got the better of Tsonga 1-6, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 to hand over Switzerland a 1-0 lead. Subsequently, Monfils pulled off a stunner in the second singles rubber, with an impressive scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 to level up the best-of-five series, 1-1.

However, Switzerland bounced back with the doubles win as the Wawrinka-Federer duo took care of Richard Gasquet and Julien Benneteau 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to go 2-1 up.

“I’m very happy, of course, that we played so well today,” DavisCup.com quoted Federer as saying. “It’s always a pleasure playing with Stan. But I think today we played exceptionally well,” he added.

In the reverse singles on Sunday, Federer is slated to cross the swords with Tsonga, before Wawrinka locks horns with Monfils in the ultimate rubber.
