Swiss tennis star Stanislas Wawrinka has got off to a flying start this season, having clinched his third consecutive Chennai Open triumph. The ‘threepeat’ seems to have bolstered his morale for the rest of the year as he sets his eyes upon achieving bigger targets in the near future.

The tennis’ ‘Big Four’ – comprising of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal – have dominated the circuit in the last few years. But, Wawrinka has managed to stage stiff competition against his fancied rivals in the recent times, and he aims to further bridge the gap.

Stressing the importance of playing the ‘Big Four’ more frequently, Wawrinka said (via straitstimes): “When you practise against players who are better than you, it means that you are constantly pushed. You have to find new solutions (to counter them).”

“I practise with the ‘big four’ as much as possible. I can accept that I will probably never become a better player than them, but, by playing with them as often as possible, I can close the gap.”

Interestingly, Wawrinka is also one of the two players (other being Andy Roddick) to have three wins against each of the ‘Big Four’ members, the report added.

Opponent Wins Losses
Novak Djokovic 4 19
Roger Federer 3 18
Andy Murray 7 8
Rafael Nadal 3 14
