It turned out to be a mixed day for the women’s seeds at the Roland Garros on Friday. While some of the top contenders including Agnieszka Radwanska, Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep advanced to the fourth round, the likes of Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova bowed out of the tournament.

Romania’s Halep, the No. 6 seed, overcame a stiff challenge from Japanese journeywoman Naomi Osaka, as she rallied from a set down to register a 4-6 6-2 6-3 on court Suzzane-Lenglen. The Romanian star has tough a challenge ahead with Australian veteran Samantha Stosur awaiting her up next.

Stosur, a former Grand Slam champion, caused a major upset in the draw by knocking out last year’s runner-up Lucie Safarova. The unseeded Stosur fired 14 aces en route a 6-3 6-7 7-5 win in an intense battle. This was just her fourth win in 15 head-to-head meetings against her Czech counterpart.

2nd seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland pulled off her fifth win against Czech Republic’s Barbora Strycova in as many career matches as she sailed into the round of 16 following a 6-2 6-7 6-2 conquest. Moving on, she faces either Sloane Stephens or Tsvetana Pironkova for a place in the quarter-finals.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, the No. 4 seed, cruised for a routine 6-3 6-0 victory against Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

In the other upset of the day, two-time Grand Slam champion and 10th seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic was bageled twice by 108th-ranked American Shelby Rogers, on her way to a 0-6 7-6 0-6 defeat.
