World No.1 Serena Williams overcame a first set debacle to guide the United States of America to a win over determined Italy at the Hopman Cup on Monday. Up against an experienced player in Flavia Pennetta, the muscular American exhibited rusty piece of tennis in the opening set, before prevailing over the former 0-6, 6-3, 6-0 in an uncanny fashion.

Later, American John Isner and Italian Fabio Fognini locked horns in the men’s encounter. The match produced some grueling tennis, as both the players played their heart out to snatch a win. Eventually, Isner pulled off the battle of nerves to clinch a thrilling 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 conquest to hand over an unassailable 2-0 lead to the United States.

In the mixed doubles rubber, Serena and Isner had nerves of steel en route their 6-2, 2-6, 11-9 win over Pennetta and Fognini to complete a whitewash.

Later in the day, Great Britain are scheduled to square off against France.
