The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will miss two of the most fancied players on the Women’s Association Tour (WTA) after Serena Williams and Eugenie Bouchard were compelled to pull out of the premier-level event.

While top-ranked Serena has reportedly still not recovered from respiratory issues, Canadian star Bouchard has a troubled arm that ruled her out of the prestigious tournament.

Serena’s sister Venus Williams, who won the last year’s title here, said that regular travelling from one continent to the other has ruined the former’s physical condition further.

“Serena was sick in Australia and then she had to withdraw from her Fed Cup match,” Venus was quoted as saying by The National. “It’s just very challenging to hit three and four continents in a row.

“It’s a lot when you do all that traveling and you don’t get a chance to get better. So she needs this time to just try to recoup and feel better.”

In their absence, Simona Halep of Romania will headline the 64-player draw. The main round begins from Monday.
