Spain’s 4rd seed Garbine Muguruza survived a stiff first round challenge from Germany’s Anna Schmiedlova as she rallied from one set down to pull off a 3-6 6-3 6-3 win at the Roland Garros here on Monday.

Muguruza started slowly but took pace eventually to rip through Schmiedlova’s defensive play, thereby clinching her third win against the same opponent in as many matches this year, having previously beaten her in Madrid and Wuhan.

Up next, Muguruza is slated to cross the swords with little-known Frenchwoman Myrtille Georges, who defeated American Christina McHale 6-7 6-0 6-3 in the other opening round encounter.

2nd seed Agnieszka Radwanksa of Poland looked in glorious touch en route a 6-0 6-2 demolition of Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski. Moving on, she’s will face off against a formidable opponent in Caroline Garica of France, who registered a 6-3 7-5 triumph over Lesia Tsurenko here.

Elsewhere, former runner-up Simona Halep of Romania, the No. 6 seed, needed just 45 minutes to brush aside Japan’s Nao Hibino, 6-2 6-0.

13th seed Sara Errani, also a former finalist here, faced a stunning first round exit at the hands of unseeded Bulgarian Svetlana Pironkova, losing 3-6 2-6.
