Ace Indian tennis player Leander Paes revealed that countryman Rohan Bopanna turned down his offer of playing doubles together this year in order to tune up for the upcoming Rio Olympics, where the duo is projected to join forces.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion said that Bopanna declined the offer saying that he is comfortable playing with Romania’s Florin Mergea, with whom he has been playing since April last year and clinched two ATP titles together in 2015.

“I had asked Rohan if he would like to play with me this year in the lead up to Rio, but he has turned me down saying he is very comfortable with Florin Mergea and would like to continue that,” Paes was quoted as saying by TOI.

Moving on, Paes and Bopanna have found out each other on the opposite sides yet again as it has still not been decided as to whom of the two will represent the country in the mixed doubles event alongside Sania Mirza, the top-ranked female doubles player.

But Paes believes that he should get a go, given that he notched up three off the four mixed doubles titles (with Martina Hingis) at the Grand Slams in 2015.

“I certainly hope I am India’s front runner in mixed doubles. I want to compete with Sania at the Olympics. It will be India’s best chance of winning a medal,” he said.
