While almost everyone (literally) has got world No. 1 Rafael Nadal winning this year’s Roland Garros title, a former French tennis star thinks otherwise.

Henri Lenconte, a former runner-up in singles and a doubles champion at the premier clay event, has said that he feels someone from the younger generation will upstage Nadal, the ‘King of Clay’, to emerge as the surprise winner this season.

“I think everyone bets Rafael Nadal will win, but I think we’re going to have a surprise,” Leconte told bolamarela.pt.

“I do not know why but I feel the winner will be amazing this year in the men’s box. I think someone from the new generation will finally get their chance.”

Asked who could possibly damage Nadal’s chances of pulling off an unprecedented 11th Major on the red dirt, the 54-year-old came up with Dominic Thiem’s name.

A couple of weeks back, the Austrian No. 1 ended Nadal’s winning streak in the Madrid Masters quarter-finals.

Leconte, however, added that it won’t be easy to get the better of Nadal in best-of-five matches.

“Undoubtedly the Dominic Thiem, because he managed to do it in Madrid. But Roland Garros will be more complicated as it’s best-of-five sets.

“Nadal is favorite for every match, but I feel we can have a surprise.”
