Rafael Nadal the ‘Greatest’ and ‘Most Difficult’ Opponent I’ve Had: Roger Federer

Roger Federer sure has had a tough time dealing with Rafael Nadal, who has turned out to be his arch-rival over the years. The duo has been a part of some epic matches, having squared-off against each other for as many as 34 times in competitive tennis.

“I’m a big fan of him – simply because he has been the greatest and most difficult opponent for me I have ever had. Therefore I have utmost respect for him,” the 34-year-old – who prevailed in a three-set battle against Nadal in their last match in Basel – told noz.de.

Nadal, however, saw a dip in his form towards the end of last year and in the first quarter of the 2016 season. The plummet resulted in his first loss to Federer in their last five meetings. However, Federer believes that the Spaniard is far from being over.

“I am the last person who stops that he can’t achieve anything hereafter. And I know how good he is,” added the 34-year-old.

Meanwhile, Nadal seems to have found back his rhythm of late, having won back-to-back titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, before signing-off with decent outcomes in Madrid and Rome – all on his favorite surface clay – which should bolster his morale ahead of the prestigious Roland Garros 2016 that begins next week.
