Former World No. 1 Pete Sampras looked unimpressed with Rafael Nadal’s poor form, as he insists that the Spaniard should keep all his anxiety at bay to be able to get back to the business before long.

“It just seems like anxiety is creeping in, he seems a little bit nervous, he’s hitting a lot of short balls,” Sampras, a 14-time Grand Slam champion, told The Tennis Podcast.

“Guys don’t fear him as much and it’s tough to play defense out there. Mentally and physically he’s been out there a while and is taking its toll.”

Having lost as many as 13 matches already by far, this has been Nadal’s worst season since 2004 (30-18) on paper. The 29-year-old not only failed to defend his title at the French Open, but also faced early exits at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

However, Sampras insists that it is just a matter of time before the Spanish southpaw overcomes the psychological pressure to regain his game.

“I think he is still working hard. He is doing all the right things; he is just not playing as well,” he continued further.

“When Rafa struggles, I think he feels like his career is over. But he’ll be fine. He’ll get back to where he once was.”
