Top Puerto Rican tennis player Monica Puig has set her eyes upon an historic podium finish at the Rio Olympic Games as she remains just one win shy of making it to the semi-finals.

The 37th-ranked Puig has been in the form of her life, defeating Slovakia’s Polana Hercog, Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and World No. 3 Garbine Muguruza of Spain without dropping a set en route the quarter-finals of the women’s singles event.

A win against her next opponent in Germany’s Laura Siegemund will see her inch closer to clinching a medal. Should the 22-year-old succeed in her quest, she would earn her country only the ninth Olympic medal overall and the first ever in the sport of tennis.

“I want that medal and I’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish that goal,” Puig was quoted as saying by rio.itftennis.com. “It is a big dream for me I play for Puerto Rico and there is no greater pride than that to me.”

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is yet to open its medal tally at the Rio Games.
