Former World No. 1 Jim Courier insists that Rafael Nadal may be the ‘King of Clay’ and his fortress at the French Open may be unprecedented, but he will not start as the favourite at this year’s tournament in Paris.

“For the first time in many years Nadal will not be the favourite going into Roland Garros,” Courier was quoted as saying by The Telegraph India.

9-time champion Nadal has looked rusty of late, especially on his much-loved surface clay. His substandard 17-5 record on the dirt does not seem to amaze Courier, who rates top-ranked Novak Djokovic as the favourite instead.

“That role is now firmly occupied by Novak Djokovic,” he continued. “Nadal is less vulnerable in Paris, given the best of five-set format which allows him more time to problem solve, but there are now guys in the locker room who see him as an opportunity rather than an immovable obstacle.”

Furthermore, Courier stated that Japanese superstar Kei Nishikori is his second favourite behind Djokovic. “Kei Nishikori is my second favourite behind Djokovic and I firmly believe he is the second best clay-court player today.”
