Defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka named his favorites for the prestigious Roland Garros title that is scheduled to be held from May 22 to June 5 in Paris. And surprisingly, he did not consider fellow Swiss Roger Federer in the three-player list!

Wawrinka and Federer are known to be good friends, and have also complimented each other well on court. However, Federer was the only one left out of Wawrinka’s favorites, who deemed the rest of the ‘Fab Four’ as the top contenders for the clay title.

The fourth-ranked Swiss, who defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the last year’s title-clash here, believes that the Serb is going to start as the top favorite yet again, followed by No. 3 Andy Murray and 9-time champion Rafael Nadal.

“I see Novak, for sure, as the favorite. I think he’s going to be tough to beat. He’s going to be the big favorite,” Wawrinka was quoted by Tennis Now.

“Then I would put Murray and Rafa. Rafa is starting to get back some confidence. He’s playing better. Murray is playing extremely well since few years now especially on clay. Last year he won Madrid. So it’s going to be I think a really interesting Roland Garros again.”

The fact that Federer hasn’t been as active this season due to injuries could well be the reason behind his omission in Wawrinka’s considerations. But, whether the veteran rises to the occasion or subsists to his substandard run, remains to be seen.
