No Player as Big as Serena Williams: Kim Clijsters

Four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters heaped praise on present women’s World No. 1 Serena Williams, stating that none of the tennis players can go neck-to-neck with the American on a consistent basis.

Williams, a winner of 21 majors, has undisputedly been the most dominant player on the women’s tour in recent times. Although she has slipped here and there on a few occasions, none of her counterparts has succeeded in staging fierce rivalry.

That said, Clijsters rues inconsistency among the present crop of players including the likes of Spain’s Garbine Muguruza and Eugenie Bouchard of Canada – both of whom have made to Grand Slam finals in the past before being denied by their respective opponents.

“There are a lot of good players, but no big one like Serena,” Clijsters told Hindustan Times. “A lot of players can beat Serena or Maria (Sharapova) on their day, but the consistency is missing.

“Garbine Muguruza did well by reaching the Wimbledon final last year and Eugenie Bouchard a year before, but that’s it. You cannot expect these girls to enter semi-finals of Grand Slam more often,” added the Belgian, who herself lost seven times in nine career meetings to Williams.

Meanwhile, Williams is currently bidding for her 22nd Grand Slam triumph at the French Open, where she has already made it to the pre-quarterfinals of the tournament.
