Australia have suffered a huge setback ahead of the Hopman Cup 2015 after its star player, Nick Kyrgios, announced his withdrawal from the mixed-team tournament in Perth due to a back injury.

“I’m disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Hopman Cup,” Kyrgios, 19, was quoted as saying by the tournament’s official site.

“Being selected for your country is always a privilege and I wish I could be there,” he added. “I hope to be able to play at the Hopman Cup one day in the future.”

Consequently, Matt Ebden has been named in as the replacement, and will represent the hosts alongside Casey Dellacqua.

“I am pumped to play alongside Casey, another West Australian and someone I have known for many, many years,” said an ecstatic Ebden.

The tournament is scheduled to begin from January 4, with the Australians drawn to cross the swords with Poland in the second tie on the opening day’s play.
