Nick Kyrgios embroiled himself in fresh controversy at the Citi Open in Washington on Friday.

Playing against Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in the third round, Kyrgios repeatedly expressed displeasure at chair umpire Fergus Murhpy’s calls.

The Australian didn’t mind venting his frustration as he chucked his water bottle at the umpire’s chair during a changeover, causing a bit of damage.

Not surprisingly, Murphy handed him a code of violation, before Kyrgios claimed his action was unintentional.

“It slipped out of my hand. It slipped out of my hand. I was trying to take a drink and it slipped out of my hand,” he claimed.

This was Kyrgios’ second run-in with Murhpy in as many days, having snubbed a handshake following his second round win over Gilles Simon.

Despite the controversy, the 24-year-old went on to prevail 6-2 7-5 over Nishioka and set up a quarter-final clash with little-known Norbert Gombos of Slovakia.
