Reigning Olympic champion Monica Puig notched up a stunning 6-3 1-6 10-6 win over five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova in front of around 12,000 lively spectators in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Friday.

Sharapova, a former World No. 1, is currently suspended from competitive tennis after being tested positive for a banned substance called meldonium. But the 29-year-old was, nonetheless, a crowd-puller here.

The duo kept the spectators entertained all through the thrilling contest, and it was the home girl Puig who ended on the winning side.  The two, then, posed for selfies along with the energized fans in the stadium.

Puig, later, took to Twitter to show appreciation for her Russian opponent. “Thanks for giving me the opportunity to get to know you these days, showing you my home and all the laughs! We did it!” she  wrote.

Sharapova was quick to oblige. “Thank you for the nice words. We did it and YOU killed it! Congrats on an amazing event, Puerto Rico is a special place,” she replied.
