5-time Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova, kicked-off her new season’s campaign on a high by smoothly progressing to the quarterfinals of the WTA Brisbane International on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Russian had no issues, thrashing her way to 6-0, 6-1 win over Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova in the second-round battle that lasted for just over an hour.

“It certainly felt good to start, you know, after not playing a match for a couple of months,” quoted Sharapova as saying.

“Despite all the training, it’s such a different feeling to go out on the court and play in front of, you know, a crowd in an actual match atmosphere,” she added.

Up next, Sharapova will either meet Carla Suarez Navarro or Mirjana Lucic-Baroni for a place in the last-four stage.
