Rafael Nadal has been under fire of late for not being able to prolong his fortress on clay (at least so far). Owing to a substandard 17-5 record on his much-loved surface this season, many have written off Nadal’s chances of pulling off the prestigious French Open for a record 10th time.

However, fellow tennis players – Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray – turned up in defense of the beleaguered Spaniard, who has been handed over a tough draw as he could potentially cross the swords with top-ranked biggest rival Novak Djokovic as early as in the quarterfinals.

“Everyone expects so much of Rafa at this time of the year,” Sharapova was quoted as saying by Reuters. “An individual loses a few matches, someone who’s won this event, what is it nine times, I believe? To put so many question marks, I almost think it’s a little bit disrespectful.”

Murray also lashed out at the Mallorcan’s detractors, saying: It’s quite possible that he (Rafa) goes out on the centre court and feels very good. And if he wins a couple of matches, you never know. It would be stupid to write him off.”

The main draw of the French Open 2015 gets underway Sunday in Paris.
