In a massive blow for Indian tennis, the country’s top-ranked singles player Yuki Bhambri has withdrawn from the season-opening ATP 250 event – Chennai Open. The 23-year-old, however, is hopeful of getting in shape before the Australian Open 2016 draws near.

Bhambri, who rode on a career-best season this year to peak to No. 88 in the world rankings, had been considered to be the local hope until the injury compelled his withdrawal. He took it to his official Facebook page to share the news with his fans.

“Unfortunately my recovery has taken longer than I expected and so will not be able to play in Chennai this year. Going to keep working to be ready for Australia,” wrote Bhambri, who had also pulled out of the season-ending Hua Hin Challenger due to an injury.

Consequently, the likes of Somdev Devvarman and Saketh Myneni are now projected to spearhead the home contingent in the draw that will be led by two-time Grand Slam champion and two-time defending champion, Stanislas Wawrinka.
