Former World No. 4 Greg Rusedski has backed British prospect Johanna Konta to break into the top 10 of the world rankings by the end of this season.

The 25-year-old Konta was ranked as low as No. 146 in mid-2015, but took massive strides towards success – including a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open earlier this year – to peak to a career-best position of No. 13 (now 14) in August.

This makes Rusedski believe that Konta can go even further in her quest to crack the elite list. “It’s something she will do by the end of the year,” he told BBC.

Konta is currently gearing for the US Open 2016 that is scheduled to get underway on Monday. Seeded 13th, she has been drawn to square-off against American Bethanie-Mattek Sands.

Speaking of her chances at the season-ending Grand Slam, Rusedski tipped Konta to go deep into the draw.

“I expect her to get to the round of 16,” added Rusedski, a former US Open finalist himself. “If she gets a good draw, don’t be surprised to see her back in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam again.”

Konta had lost in the fourth round to Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova last year here.
