Denis Shapovalov is an honest 18-year-old. He doesn’t mince his words. Well, if his latest words are anything to go by.

Asked if he was surprised by the comebacks of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the rising Canadian star was quick to agree but insisted that the legendary duo must hang up their racquets soon for him to qualify for the big events.

“Yes, it (their comebacks) surprised me,” Shapovalov told Marca. “The only thing I hope is that they do not play for much longer. It would be difficult to qualify for the Masters if they continue to play.

“They have played amazing and have taught me because they are real champions despite their injuries and their age. It is very nice to see but for my interests I hope they retire soon.”

Both Federer (36) and Nadal (31) sprung up surprises by returning to win the four Grand Slams between them this year. The duo will look to continue the momentum heading into January’s Australian Open, where they played out an epic final this season.
