Nick Kyrgios began his Italian Open campaign by doing what he does the best: surprising his opponent.

Taking on fellow young gun Daniil Medvedev in Rome opener, Kyrgios went on to serve underarm on the very first point of the match.

No wonder, Medvedev could just manage to return a backhand slice, which was effortlessly put away by Kyrgios, much to the crowd’s applause.

The Australian star went on to prevail 6-3 3-6 6-3 over his 12th-seeded Russian opponent, in what was his first win on clay this season.

While Kyrgios dominated his first serve by unleashing 15 aces, Medvedev looked rusty as he committed five double faults in the contest that lasted one hour and 33 minutes.

This is not the first time Kyrgios has ditched the orthodox way to serve though. Among the many he’s served this year, the one against Rafael Nadal at Mexican Open garnered some criticism.

He is now scheduled to lock horns with Norwegian Casper Ruud, who registered a 7-5 0-6 6-3 win over Britain’s Daniel Evans in the first round battle of qualifiers.
