World No. 11 Gael Monfils could skip the next week’s US Open Tennis Championships if he fails to recover from back injury in time.

The Frenchman had conceded a walkover to his quarter-final opponent Dominic Thiem at the Cincinnati Masters due to issues with his back. With the season-ending Grand Slam just a few days away, Monfils is unsure of his participation.

“It’s sad that I injured my back again, but I will not risk it if I feel the pain. Let’s see how it goes,” said the 29-year-old about his chances.

The injury woes have come at the wrong time for Monfils, who had been in spectacular form of late. He clinched the biggest title of his career by triumphing in Washington, before recording decent performances in the subsequent tournaments.

Should he fail to make it through, he will be the third biggest casualty for the tournament, which has already lost World No. 4 Roger Federer (knee) and No. 8 Tomas Beredych (appendicitis).

The main draw matches at the US Open are scheduled to get underway on August 29.
