Fitness the Key to Cracking Top 5: Bernard Tomic

Bernard Tomic has set his eyes upon improving his fitness level as he aims to break into the top five of the world ranking in the near future.

The 19th-ranked Australian suffered a heart-breaking 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-4 10-8 defeat to lower-ranked Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the fourth round of the Wimbledon on Monday. This seems to have made him realize the additions to incorporate for greater success.

“I’ve played so many times – in my career – fourth rounds, third rounds in grand slams and only been to the quarters once,” said the 2011 Wimbledon quarter-finalist, as quoted by

“I just have to work, and just fitness, that’s it; I mean, I can play tennis always and not have to do fitness and be top 20, 30 player for the rest of my life,” he continued.

“But if I want to be in the top five in the world, I have to work hard and it will come, not just one month… six months, one year of work, then I have an opportunity.”

At 23, Tomic is currently the third youngest player in the ATP Top 20, behind only Austrian Dominic Thiem (No. 8, 22 years) and countryman Nick Kyrgios (No.18, 21).
