England’s opening batsman Alex Hales escaped a heavy penalty as he was fined a mere 15 per cent of his match fees following his controversial dismissal against Pakistan during the ongoing Test in London.

It all started after Hales flicked a full delivery off Mohammad Amir to Yasir Shah at square leg, who claimed to have grabbed it cleanly. Hales, however, stayed put as the on-field umpires sought the help of third umpire Joel Wilson.

Despite zeroing in on multiple angles, the third umpire couldn’t come to a conclusion, thereby consolidating the original decision as Hales walked back to the hut in disappointment.

Subsequently, Hales confronted the third umpire in his workplace following the day’s play, to which the International Cricket Council (ICC) reacted by penalizing 15 per cent of his match fees for “inappropriate comments”.

The consequence was deemed to be lenient by many, considering the nature of his misdemeanor. No wonder, Hales found himself lucky at least on this occasion!
