Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova recorded facile straight-set wins as Czech Republic took a commanding 2-0 lead over Germany on the first day of the Fed Cup final in Prague on Saturday.

Earlier, World No.4 Kvitova made short work of 14th-ranked German Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-4 to give Czech Republic an early lead.

In the second rubber, World No. 17 Safarova put up a stellar performance to tame 10th-ranked Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-4 to bolster the hosts in a imposing position at the end of first day’s play.

The Czechs will look to pull off the tie early on tomorrow, when Kvitova meets Kerber and Safarova clashes with Petkovic in the reverse singles on Sunday.

Later, in doubles, Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka will lock horns with Germans Julia Goerges and Sabine Lisicki in the fifth rubber.

Should the Czechs pull off the match-up, it will be their 3rd Fed Cup title in 4 years.
