Led by Lucie Safarova’s stunning conquest of Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, Czech Republic secured a 2-1 win over Canada in the Hopman Cup opener on Sunday.

Safarova, who represented her country in the absence of World No. 4 Petra Kvitova, got Czech an early lead by overcoming 7th-ranked Bouchard 6-0, 6-4 in a 68-minute affair.

Later, in the men’s rubber, Vasek Pospisil pulled one back as he got the better of Adam Pavlasek, 7-6, 6-2 to level the honors after the singles matches.

In the mixed doubles, Safarova and Pavlasek paired up to dominate Bouchard and Pospisil, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the match-up, 2-1.

“It’s the best way I could imagine and I started really strong and was pressuring her from the first point,” Safarova was quoted as saying by the tournament’s official site.

Showering accolades upon her 20-year-old compatriot, Safarova added: “I was trying to help him (Pavlasek) there but he didn’t need me… he was playing amazing.”

In the second encounter of the day, hosts Australia are scheduled to lock horns with Poland.
